How Much Does Professional Blinds Installation Cost? An Honest Guide

Kyle Van Dalen of Blind Concepts with newly installed blockout wave curtains in a bedroom

It’s the first question almost every client asks us: “How much will my blinds cost?” After 38 years of making and installing blinds and curtains in Johannesburg and Pretoria, our honest answer is that it depends on your windows. But we can tell you exactly what it depends on, what should be included, and how to make sure you don’t end up paying twice.

The short answer

There is no single price for blinds installation, because every window is different. The cost of your blinds depends on the width and height of each window, the product you choose (roller blinds, Venetian blinds, curtains or shutters) and the quality of the fabric and mechanisms. That’s why any honest supplier will need your measurements before giving you a price.

At Blind Concepts, installation is included in your quote. There are no surprise extras.

Why we can’t give one price without measurements

Two “standard” bedroom windows can be completely different sizes, and blinds and curtains are made to measure. A price quoted without measurements is just a guess, and guesses usually end in extra costs or blinds that don’t fit properly.

To give you an accurate quote we need three things:

  • The width of each window
  • The height of each window
  • The product you’re interested in

If you’re not sure what you want, that’s completely fine. We’ll help you decide during your free home consultation.

What affects the cost of blinds and curtains?

1. The type of product

Roller blinds, Venetian blinds, wave curtains and shutters are all priced differently. Each one suits different rooms, light needs and budgets.

2. The type of fabric

Within one product the fabric makes a big difference. For example, see-through sheer or sunscreen fabrics are often more affordable than blockout fabrics, which cost more because they block light completely. That’s ideal for bedrooms.

3. Quality and brand

Not all blinds are made equal. In the South African market there are budget-friendly ranges and premium ranges. Premium suppliers such as Blind Designs, Aluvert and Blindquip cost more. The same applies to curtain fabrics: high-end fabric houses such as Hertex are priced above entry-level fabrics. At Blind Concepts we focus on quality, because quality is what lasts.

4. Motorisation

Motorised blinds and curtains, for example with Somfy motors on blinds or Omnia motors on curtain tracks, add to the cost. They’re worth it for large, high or hard-to-reach windows.

5. Difficult or very high windows

Some windows need extra equipment, like scaffolding for double-volume spaces. With us that’s included in your quote upfront, never added on afterwards.

Is installation included in the price?

With Blind Concepts, yes. Everything is included in your quotation: measuring, manufacturing and professional installation by our own team. If your job needs scaffolding, it’s in the quote. What we quote is what you pay, with no surprises at the end.

We also offer after-sales service. If something ever needs attention, we come back and sort it out.

The real cost of going cheap

We’re often called out to fix or replace cheap blinds and curtains that were installed elsewhere. These are the problems we see most:

  • Bent PVC Venetian slats that look sloppy and old within a short time
  • Curtain fabric damaged by the sun that starts to tear
  • Poor installation, with brackets and blinds pulling out of the wall
  • No after-sales support: when something goes wrong, the installer can’t be reached

In the end, these clients pay twice: once for the cheap blinds, and again to have the job done properly.

“Rather save up and do it right the first time. Doing it cheap and then redoing it is actually more expensive.” Kyle Van Dalen, Blind Concepts

Our advice if you’re on a budget

If you’ve just moved into a new home or the budget is tight, don’t do the whole house with cheap products. Start with the rooms that matter most and do them properly:

  1. Bedrooms first. These are the most important for privacy and a good night’s sleep.
  2. Areas where you need privacy, such as rooms facing the street or neighbours.
  3. Dining room and lounge later. These areas can often stay open for a while.

Then save up for the next rooms. Buying once and buying right is the best way to save money on blinds and curtains.

How to compare blinds quotes properly

Don’t only look at the price. When comparing quotes, make sure you’re comparing like with like. Ask these questions:

  • What fabric am I getting? Is it a quality fabric that can handle our South African sun?
  • What mechanisms are used? Cheap mechanisms break first.
  • Is installation included? Are there any extras, like scaffolding or travel?
  • Who installs it? Their own trained team, or subcontractors?
  • What happens after installation? If a screw comes loose or something breaks in a year or two, who comes to fix it?

A cheaper quote can easily turn into a complaint two years later. With us you know exactly who to call, and we’ll come.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to install blinds?

It depends on the size of your windows, the product and the fabric quality. At Blind Concepts installation is included in your quote, so the price you see is the total price.

Do you charge extra for installation?

No. Measuring, manufacturing and installation, including scaffolding if needed, are all included in your quote.

Can you give me a price over the phone?

We need the width and height of each window and the product you want. Send us your measurements and photos on WhatsApp, or book a free consultation and we will measure for you.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

Yes. We work on a 50% deposit and 50% before installation. If you pay in full upfront, you get 7.5% discount.

How long is a quote valid?

Our quotes are valid for 10 working days, because supplier prices can change.

Why are some blinds so much cheaper than others?

Cheaper blinds use lower-quality fabrics and mechanisms. They often bend, fade, tear or come off the wall within a year or two, which means paying again.
